Smokers urged to put quitting on their new year's agenda

Planning the key to a successful quit attempt, says Quit

Victorian smokers who are thinking about making quitting their New Year's resolution are being urged to start planning now and not leave it up to the last minute. Quit Victoria says planning your quit attempt is as easy as calling the Quitline and asking for a free New Year Quit pack.

Quit Executive Director Todd Harper says in Victoria the Quitline will be providing free resources and help throughout December and January to support smokers who decide to begin 2004 smokefree.

""We want to encourage smokers to start thinking about quitting for New Year now, and to help them we've developed a New Year Quit Pack. The pack is free and available simply by calling the Quitline on 131 848. ""

Mr Harper says the New Year Quit Pack includes a 2004 Quit diary with a year’s supply of quit tips, as well as resources and information about quitting and special tools to help handle the difficult times.

“New Year is the one time of the year when just about every smoker thinks of giving up smoking. Most smokers want to quit, and more smokers aim to quit at New Year than any other time,"" he says.

“And what better way to get quitting on your agenda than a diary with a year’s supply of quit tips and loads of other useful information like helpful hints on how to beat cravings.""

Mr Harper says smokers who begin planning their quit attempt now are increasing their chances of quitting for good.

“Planning is the key to a successful quit attempt, and we encourage smokers to set a quit date. Getting the New Year off to a healthy start is as easy as calling the Quitline on 131 848.”

Mr Harper said Quitline’s trained advisors can also help with planning, and provide help and support for people trying to quit.
