Victoria's tobacco reform a step closer

Quit has welcomed the news that reforms to Victoria's Tobacco Act have received the unanimous support of State Parliament's Legislative Assembly today.
Quit Executive Director Todd Harper says it's disappointing that the introduction of reforms will be delayed, however the amendments still represent a significant advance.
'Naturally we would prefer to see the amendments, including on smokefree dining and point of sale advertising, come in sooner.
'But we'll be encouraging restaurants to act before the legislation comes in force and go smokefree before July next year. This will give them a competitive advantage over establishments that choose to wait for the legislation to come into force.'
'The delayed introduction of smokefree dining and some of the restrictions on tobacco advertising at point of sale is a minor price to pay for such a major advance in public health reform.'
'We're delighted that the amendments received bipartisan support - clearly our parliamentarians recognise the level of community support for these legislative changes.'
'These reforms to Victoria's Tobacco Act are long overdue and Health minister John Thwaites is to be congratulated on his work in bringing them about.'
'Quit also pays tribute to the constructive approach taken by the Opposition, and Health Spokesperson Robert Doyle in particular.'
