Quit Victoria and VicHealth will be urging cricket fans at today's Boxing Day test to 'lose the ashes’ – however, Aussie sports lovers can breathe easy as it’s part of a campaign to encourage smokers to make quitting their number one New Year’s Resolution.
New signage promoting the Quitline has been erected at the MCG to take advantage of the Ashes Test crowds. Signs at exits around the ground will urge smokers Let’s lose the ashes’. In addition, cricket fans entering the ground will pass through new- look turnstiles which have been transformed into large mock cigarettes with the wording We know what you’re going through - Quitline 131 848’.
Quit Executive Director Todd Harper says the signage is part of Quit’s efforts to help smokers to make quitting their New Year’s resolution.
'New Year is a time of year when many smokers think about quitting and we hope many will take the opportunity to get assistance from the Quitline,' he said.
Mr Harper says Quitline advisers will also be on hand in the lead up to New Year to help smokers on their way to a smokefree 2003.
'If you’re thinking of quitting on 1 January, then now is the time to start planning – and call the Quitline for your free New Year Quit Pack. No matter what quit method you choose, you’ll have a better chance of starting 2003 smokefree’ if you call the Quitline.'
Mr Harper says the Christmas silly season’ can be a difficult time to quit, so planning to quit on New Year’s Eve may not be the best move.
'It’s better to be realistic and set a quit date even if it’s a few weeks away – but it is important not to keep putting it off.'
The campaign is a joint initiative of VicHealth and Quit Victoria.
