Smokers in regional Victoria are being urged to make quitting their number one resolution for 2003.
Suzanne Stillman from Quit Victoria says smokers in regional areas are an important focus for Quit's new year campaign as research shows 8 of the 10 areas in the state with the highest level of smoking related deaths are in regional Victoria.
'We really want to encourage smokers in regional areas to make quitting their number one New Year’s resolution, and we’ve developed a special New Year Quit pack to support smokers who decide to begin 2003 smokefree.'
Ms Stillman says the New Year Quit Pack, which is available free by calling the Quitline, includes a 2003 diary with a year’s supply of quit tips, as well as information about quitting and a fridge magnet with 4 practical tips to deal with cravings.
'I want to remind Victorians living in regional areas that they can call the Quitline on 131 848 for the cost of a local call and ask to be sent one of our free New Year Quit packs.'
'They can also speak to one of Quitline’s trained advisors who can help with planning their quit attempt, discussing the range of products available to help with their attempt, and strategies to deal with cravings.'
Ms Stillman says smokers in regional areas who want to quit to can also tap into support and advice that is available in their own community.
'For smokers who are thinking about quitting, talking to your local doctor, pharmacist or community health centre Quit facilitator is a good place to start.'
'New Year is the one time of the year when just about every smoker thinks of giving up smoking. Most smokers want to quit, and more smokers aim to quit at New Year than any other time,' she says.
Ms Stillman says smokers who start planning their quit attempt now are increasing their chance of quitting for good.
