Review of tobacco advertising restrictions welcomed

Quit Victoria has welcomed a review of Commonwealth legislation restricting tobacco advertising.

Quit Victoria Executive Director Todd Harper said it was clear that the tobacco industry had been actively exploiting loopholes in the legislation through indirect forms of tobacco marketing.

'Most of this promotion is aimed at young people through tobacco sponsored events like fashion parades and dance parties,' Mr Harper said.

'We also have seen events like the Covent Garden National Opera Studio scholarship being supported by Philip Morris.'

'If it is reasonable to ban tobacco advertising on television, radio and the print media then we should be consistent and ban all other forms of tobacco promotion,' Mr Harper said.

'The tobacco industry deserves no favours given that around 19,000 Australians die every year from smoking-related illnesses.'

Quit Victoria has previously exposed how Philip Morris has used its advertising agencies to establish new companies and websites to promote nightclub and dance party events where tobacco products are heavily promoted.

Mr Harper said entertainment industry sources have also claimed that in return for sponsorship dollars from tobacco companies, dance parties have been themed in the colours of cigarette packages.
