An Australian study has estimated that in 1992, 18,920 Australians died from disease due to active smoking.(4) Active smoking was the cause of around 15% of all deaths in 1992.(4) Table 3.4 shows the numbers of deaths caused or prevented by active tobacco use in Australia in 1992 (See Section 3.14 for discussion about diseases prevented by smoking). These figures are likely to be conservative.(4) The recent decision to allow tobacco to be identified as a cause of death on death certificates will improve accuracy of these data in years to come.(161)
