4.6 Public attitudes

Surveys on beliefs about the health risks of passive smoking were commissioned by the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria in Victoria in 1985,(40) 1989,(41) 1991,(42) and 1992(43) and the New South Wales Cancer Council in 1990(44) (Table 4.1). The results show that a majority of smokers, as well as non-smokers, believe that passive smoking is harmful to health, and that this awareness has increased over time.
