Smokers in regional Victoria are being urged to make quitting their number one resolution for 2002.
Quit Executive Director Todd Harper says smokers in regional areas are a particular focus for Quit's New Year campaign as research shows 8 of the 10 areas in the state with the highest level of smoking related deaths are in regional Victoria.
Mr Harper says the local government areas of La Trobe, Mitchell, Moira, Gannawarra, Hepburn, Delatite, Glenelg and Moyne are among the top ten areas in the state with the highest level of smoking related deaths.
'We really want to encourage smokers in regional areas to make quitting their number one New Year’s resolution, and we’ve developed a special New Year Quit pack to support smokers who decide to begin 2002 smokefree.'
Mr Harper says the New Year Quit Pack, which is available free by calling the Quitline, includes a 2002 diary with a year’s supply of quit tips, as well as information about quitting and special giveaways to help deal with cravings.
Almost half of callers to the Quitline in Victoria are from outside metropolitan areas.
'I want to remind Victorians living in regional areas that they can call the Quitline on 131 848 for the cost of a local call and ask to be sent a New Year Quit pack.'
'They can also speak to one of Quitline’s trained advisors who can help with planning their quit attempt, discussing the range of products available to help with their attempt, and strategies to deal with cravings.'
He has also encouraged smokers who want to quit to tap into the support and advice that is available in their own community.
'For smokers who are thinking about quitting, talking to your local doctor or pharmacist is a good place to start.'
'New Year is the one time of the year when just about every smoker thinks of giving up smoking. Most smokers want to quit, and more smokers aim to quit at New Year than any other time,' he says.
Mr Harper says smokers who start planning their quit attempt now are increasing their chance of quitting for good.
'Planning is a key part of a successful quit attempt, and we encourage smokers to set a quit date. Getting the New Year off to a healthy start is as easy as calling the Quitline on 131 848.'
