Quit urges Victorians to go smokefree for 2006
Quitline sets 20 000 Callback target

With the festive season in full swing, and 2006 just around the corner it's time for Victorians to start thinking about New Year's resolutions.

Smokers who are thinking about making quitting their resolution are urged to start planning to ensure they are fully prepared to butt out when the clock hits midnight on New Year's eve.

Quit's Executive Director Todd Harper says New Year is a time when quitting is top of mind for most smokers, and to increase the chances of quitting for good the best time to start planning is now.

'New Year is the one time of the year when just about every smoker thinks of giving up smoking. We know that most smokers want to quit, and that more smokers aim to quit at New Year than any other time,' he says.

'To be successful, smokers must want to quit, and if smokers seek additional support such as the free advice offered through the Quitline their chances of quitting successfully are increased.'

Mr Harper said a key service offered through the Quitline is the Callback program, whereby a trained advisor speaks to a caller twice before their quit date and up to four times afterwards to ensure they have the best chance possible of making a successful quit attempt.

'I would encourage anyone thinking about quitting this year to call the Quitline on 13 QUIT, and speak to a advisor about organising a callback.'

'Nearly 17 000 people have used the Quitline Callback service in the last 6 years, and we would expect to see that number hit 20 000 in the next 12 months.'

Mr Harper said the callbacks are spread out over a period of time aimed to increase the likelihood of maintaining a smokefree lifestyle well after the dust has settled on New Year festivities.

The Quitline will work hard throughout the holiday season to ensure help is on hand to provide support and guidance to all those smokers who want to begin the New Year smokefree.
