Quit has used World No Tobacco Day to launch the new Quitline number, 13 QUIT.
Executive Director of Quit Victoria, Mr Todd Harper said introducing 13 QUIT emphasises what the Quitline is all about and at the same time is a catchy new way to ensure the number remains in people's heads 365 days a year.
""Research reveals that up to 80% of regular smokers would like to quit,"" said Mr Harper.
“However despite a call to the Quitline doubling the chance of a successful quit attempt, many smokers still can’t remember what the actual phone number is.”
“The Quitline is one of the most important numbers a smoker can know, and if it’s not on the tip of their tongue when they think about quitting then it is a lost opportunity.”
“Many smokers may put off a quit attempt because they don’t have the number handy or they cannot remember it instantly. By putting the word QUIT in the number we are hoping that these situations will soon be a thing of the past.”
“The number 13, when combined with QUIT, is far from unlucky for smokers in Australia. In fact, now it will symbolise a lifestyle change for the better.”
Since the beginning of the new millennium the Quitline has received almost half a million calls nationally, indicating that many Australians who regularly smoke would prefer to be smokefree.
Mr Harper said although the Quitline phone number has changed to 13 7848 (13 QUIT), the high quality service being offered at the other end of the line has not.
“Think of 13 QUIT as a new name for an old and trusted friend. The Quitline itself has not changed; it still provides high quality support and guidance to help smokers wanting to quit,” said Mr Harper.
The old number (131 848) will be active for a period of time, to make certain that smokers have enough time to adapt to the change.

- Since January 2000 over 465 600 people have called the Quitline nationally
- 16.6% of Victorian adults are regular smokers (smoke daily or at least weekly)
- Almost 50% of adults in Victoria have never smoked
- 17.4% of Victorian men smoke, compared to 15.8% of women
- 23.4% of young Victorians aged 18-29 are smokers
- Almost 4000 Victorians die every year from smoking caused illnesses
