Now it's time to put all your work into practice and quit.
You are ready
- You've made your decision to quit.
- You have any extra information or support you feel you need.
- You've done your planning.
- You've set your quit date.
If you are quitting by yourself, the best approach is to stop completely and suddenly on your quit date. Using a professional coaching service in combination with quitting medications can assist you in quitting successfully.
Getting support from a quitting coach
Coaching will increase your chances of succeeding at quitting. Many coaching services are free or low-cost. The following coaching services can help you to quit:
- call the Quitline on 13 7848 (13 QUIT)
- go online with the QuitCoach
- talk to your doctor, pharmacist or health professional
- use a one-on-one coaching service.
Using quitting medications
Medications can help you if you are addicted to nicotine. Quitting medications reduce withdrawal symptoms such as cravings, irritability, mood swings and anxiety.
Quitting medications will not stop withdrawal symptoms altogether. Your smoking may be linked to habits and emotions.
There are two kinds of quitting medications:
- nicotine replacement products (patches, gum, inhalers)
- prescription medications.
If you decide to use prescription medications, you will need to consult your doctor.
