Fresh Start course
The Fresh Start course consists of eight sessions run over four weeks. The course is for smokers who want to quit, cut down or learn to manage their smoking. Sessions are between 60 and 90 minutes.
Course structure:
- Session 1: Understanding smoking and quitting
- Session 2: Planning to quit
- Session 3: Health effects of smoking and quitting methods
- Session 4: Coping without cigarettes physically
- Session 5: Coping without cigarettes emotionally
- Session 6: Staying stopped in the short term
- Session 7: Staying stopped in the long term
- Session 8: Enjoying being a non-smoker forever
Short course
The Short course includes the same content as the Fresh Start course, but run in 2 sessions of 3 hours duration. Sessions are 2-3 weeks apart, with Quitline support between sessions.
Course structure:
- Session 1: Understanding smoking and preparing to quit
- Session 2: Dealing with quitting challenges and staying quit
One-to-one support
Quit Educators are also equipped to provide one-to-one support for smokers in the form of a brief intervention. This support can be very short (as little as 5 minutes), or more extensive and ongoing depending on the role of the Educator.
Fresh Start, Short courses and one-to-one support can be facilitated in the workplace or community.
Workplace and community seminars
A 60 to 90 minute information and education session for both smokers and non-smokers. Topics covered include different quitting methods and coping techniques.
Course can include:
- Why people smoke
- What type of smoker are you?
- How to quit, cut down or learn how to manage your smoking
- How to cope with possible withdrawal symptoms
- Thinking about quitting or cutting down
- Wanting to find out how to quit and what to expect
- Wanting to know what help and support is available
- Dealing with difficulties coping with smoking restrictions
