World No Tobacco Day 31 May 2022: Tobacco's threat to our environment

ABOUT WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY 2022

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) was on Tuesday 31 May 2022. The World Health Organization (WHO) theme for WNTD 2022 was Tobacco: Threat to our environment. The campaign raised awareness of the environmental impact of tobacco – from cultivation, production, distribution, and waste.

For WNTD 2022, Quit encouraged people who care about the environment to quit smoking or vaping.

  • The production and use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes has a huge impact on our environment.

  • The tobacco industry is using greenwashing to pretend it cares about the environment.

  • The only way to stop the environmental damage caused by the production and use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes is to stop using the products.

WNTD ONLINE EVENT

Online event: Protecting the environment from the tobacco industry - Tues 31 May 2022, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM AEST

A World No Tobacco Day special event, featuring speakers from the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences, Quit and WWF Australia.

Join Dr. Sarah White and others as they discuss how every stage of the tobacco cycle – from cultivation to consumer waste – is damaging to the environment, how supposedly ʻcleaner’ products (such as electronic cigarettes) present a new threat, and how the tobacco industry uses environmental concerns to distract from the damage it causes. Objectives for public health policy and approaches to tobacco control practice were also discussed.
