ABOUT WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY 2022
World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is on Tuesday 31 May 2022. The World Health Organization (WHO) theme for WNTD 2022 is Tobacco: Threat to our environment. The campaign is raising awareness of the environmental impact of tobacco – from cultivation, production, distribution, and waste.
This WNTD 2022, Quit is encouraging people who care about the environment to quit smoking or vaping.
The production and use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes has a huge impact on our environment.
The tobacco industry is using greenwashing to pretend it cares about the environment.
The only way to stop the environmental damage caused by the production and use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes is to stop using the products.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
To stop the damage, start quitting:
This WNTD2022, we're encouraging people who care about the environment to quit smoking or vaping. And we're here to help support you, wherever you are on your quitting journey. Research shows the best way to quit is to:
talk to Quitline (13 7848). Quitline counsellors, many of whom used to smoke, are trained experts in helping people break free from smoking. They will find quit strategies that work for you.
use stop smoking medication, like the nicotine patch and gum, to help manage symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.
speak with your GP. Your GP can discuss your options and give you a script for cheaper stop smoking medication.

WNTD ONLINE EVENT
Online event: Protecting the environment from the tobacco industry - Tues 31 May 2022, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM AEST
A World No Tobacco Day special event, featuring speakers from the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences, Quit and WWF Australia.
Join Quit Director Dr. Sarah White and others as they discuss how every stage of the tobacco cycle – from cultivation to consumer waste – is damaging to the environment, how supposedly ʻcleaner’ products (such as electronic cigarettes) present a new threat, and how the tobacco industry uses environmental concerns to distract from the damage it causes. Objectives for public health policy and approaches to tobacco control practice were also discussed.
