Seeing Through the Haze
Seeing Through the Haze is a free, evidence-based, curriculum-aligned vaping education resource that has been designed for use in school settings with upper-primary and secondary school students.
Seeing Through the Haze is anchored in contemporary education and health promotion principles which:
- Uses a whole-school and strengths-based approach
- Builds health literacy, critical thinking skills, protective behaviours and help- seeking strategies in young people, which can be applied to other health areas more broadly
- Encourages inquiry-based learning with linkages to local community, cessation support services and the Achievement Program
Student Resources
Student resources are available for upper primary (Years 5-6) and secondary (Years 7-8 and Years 9-10) students.
Seeing Through the Haze is structured as an interconnected learning sequence with a range of activities that can be selected across the following modules:
- Module 1 Get the Facts: students learn the foundational knowledge and skills required to understand vaping and its impacts on health
- Module 2 See Through the Haze: students examine the misinformation and marketing tactics used by industry and investigate cessation support options
- Module 3 Making Change: students bring together their knowledge and skills to create a campaign for change
Teaching Guides
To support school and health educators with the delivery of Seeing Through the Haze, teaching guides for Years 5-6 and Years 7-10 are available.
The Teaching Guide includes:
- Answers and discussion guidance for the student activities
- An overview of the resource structure with best-practice teaching and learning approaches
- Clear curriculum links with lesson planning and delivery suggestions
Please note: the teaching guide is designed to be used alongside the student education resource.
Seeing Through the Haze Lesson Cards
Newly developed lesson cards provide school and health educators with tailored options for Seeing Through the Haze delivery.
Each Year level lesson card bundle offers:
- Three topics to choose from
- Flexible delivery formats across 3 or 2 lessons while maintaining key learning outcomes
- An outline of the suggested sequence of activities including learning intentions, curriculum links, preparation and delivery time as well as page references from the Seeing Through the Haze student resources
These lesson cards can be used when:
- There is limited capacity to deliver the full suite of activities in the student resource.
- A tailored approach to activity delivery is needed to better suit student needs.
- Responding to vaping incidents within school settings or other needs of the school or community.
The Seeing Through the Haze student resource, teaching guide and lesson cards are designed to be used together. Please ensure that all applicable resources have been received before using them.

A recommended tool to strengthen a whole school approach to reducing tobacco and vape-related harms in school environments. This can be achieved by:
- The school's leadership and commitment to smoking and vaping prevention and cessation
- Ensuring the physical school environment actively supports smoke and vape-free practices
- Embedding smoking and vaping prevention education into curriculum and classroom practice
- Providing clear and accessible response and cessation support pathways for staff and students
