The first few days

The first few days of quitting can be the hardest.

Knowing what to expect can be helpful

The first few days of quitting can be the most difficult. It can be helpful to know what to expect during this time.

You will probably have strong cravings for a smoke or a vape. Cravings won’t last forever, but in the first few days they may be the strongest.

Cravings are part of what you feel during nicotine withdrawal. Your body is used to having a regular hit of nicotine. When this no longer happens, you feel nicotine withdrawal symptoms that make things difficult. This can last for about two to four weeks.

Common nicotine withdrawal symptoms include cravings, feeling angry, trouble sleeping, hunger and feeling upset. This can be a difficult time for you and those around you.

What can you do about cravings and feelings of nicotine withdrawal? Reach out to Quitline for tips and talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the help available. Try to remind yourself why you’re quitting. Health benefits, freedom from addiction and money savings are all things to look forward to.

Distract yourself to cope with cravings. Try the 4Ds  (Delay acting on the craving for five minutes and it will usually pass, Deep breathe, Drink water, or  Do something else).
