Quitting smoking is one of the most powerful choices you can make, not only for your own health but also for the people who matter most in your life.

Quitting can be challenging, but thinking about spending more wonderful moments with your loved ones can give you the motivation you need. While it may feel difficult, there are countless reasons to keep trying.

Whatever your reason for quitting, every step you take brings you closer to your ultimate goal of being smoke-free.

Benefits of quitting

Quitting smoking or vaping can bring many benefits to your life:

  • Reduce your risk of smoking- or vaping-related diseases. About 2 out of every 3 lifelong smokers die from smoking-related causes. The good news is that once you quit, your body begins to heal itself.

  • Reduce the health risks of second-hand smoke for your family

  • Save money

  • Spend more time with your family and set a good example for your children

  • You may notice improvements in your sense of taste and smell

Talk to your doctor

Your doctor can also help you quit smoking or vaping. You can ask questions such as:

  • How can I manage nicotine withdrawal symptoms?

  • Are there medications that can help me quit?

  • How can I avoid or reduce the side effects of these medications?

  • Do I need to review the use of my regular medications?

Supporting a family member who is quitting?

There are many ways you can help someone who is trying to quit. Here are some tips:

  • Respect them

  • Offer support

  • Let them know you’ll be there whenever they need you

  • Stay positive and optimistic
