Referring a client to Quitline
Quitline (13 7848) is a confidential, evidence-based telephone counselling service.
Highly skilled, friendly Quitline counsellors deliver behavioural interventions to help people stop smoking and/or vaping. This includes helping people to:
Identify and manage triggers to smoke or vape
Manage nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cravings
Build motivation, skills and confidence to quit
Proactive referral (also called warm handover) has the highest conversion rate. This is where the referrer completes the referral form or requests a call back during the appointment, so the client doesn't need to remember to call later. It's more effective than simply advising someone to call Quitline.
Talking to your client about the referral
Some suggested wording:
"I'd like to refer you to Quitline. They're a free service that provides one-on-one counselling and up to 12 weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy posted to your door. If it's OK with you, I'll fill out the referral now and they'll give you a call."
For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, mentioning that a counsellor from mob is available often changes how the offer lands:
"Quitline has a team of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander counsellors. If you'd like to yarn with one of them, you can ask when they call."
Need to refer a patient?
