Risks of vaping while pregnant

If you are pregnant, or trying to get pregnant, quitting vaping is safest for your baby.

Quitting smoking before pregnancy is also very important as smoking can lead to many health risks for you and your baby.

Vaping during pregnancy leads to a higher risk of having a small baby or a premature baby.1, 2

Delivering a small baby

Vaping during pregnancy is a risk factor for having a baby that is small-for-gestation age.1, 3 This means that the baby is among the smallest (in the lowest 10th percentile) when compared to other babies born after the same number of weeks of pregnancy.

Most small babies are born healthy. But some small babies can have difficulties with breathing, feeding and other problems.4 Small babies may need extra care after birth to help with these conditions.4

Premature birth

Vaping during pregnancy is also a risk factor for premature birth (preterm birth). Premature babies are born before 37 weeks of pregnancy.1-3

Most premature babies will grow up with minimal problems. But they may need specialised care in the first few weeks of life.5 In some cases, premature birth can lead to health problems.

If you are less than 37 weeks pregnant and you have any of the signs of labour, contact your healthcare team or hospital immediately.

You can make a quit vaping plan to help you quit before you get pregnant.

Nicotine and other toxic chemicals from vaping or smoking can move from the mother’s blood into the developing baby.6, 7 These chemicals may reduce the growth of the baby during pregnancy. They may also damage the placenta, a crucial support for the baby’s health.

Stopping vaping while pregnant

Quitting before you get pregnant is the best way to avoid the effects of vaping on pregnancy.

But what if you are already pregnant? There is not much known about the effects of quitting vaping during pregnancy. However, research has shown that women who quit smoking during pregnancy can reduce the risks for their babies.6
