Australian and Victorian adult smoking rates
The adult smoking rate (for Australia and Victoria) measures daily smoking among adults aged 18 years and over.
Smoking rates among adults in Australia have been steadily declining. The 2019 National Drug Strategy Household Survey report found the smoking rate among adults was 11.6%. The smoking rate of Australian adults has almost halved since 1995.
In 2019, 10.6% of Victorian adults smoked daily.
Australian secondary school student smoking rates
Current smoking among secondary school students is defined as having smoked in the week before the survey.
The report Australian secondary school students' use of tobacco, alcohol, over-the-counter drugs, and illicit substances 2017 showed the overall rate of current smoking among Australian students aged 12 to 17 years was 5%.
Among 12 to 15 year olds, 3% were current smokers; the smoking rate for both males and females was 3%.
Among 16 to 17 year olds, 10% were current smokers; the smoking rate for males was 10% and for females 9%.
Victorian secondary school students smoking rates
In 2017, the overall rate of current smoking among Victorian students aged 12 to 17 years was 4%, as found in the report Victorian secondary school students' use of tobacco, alcohol and over-the-counter and illicit substances 2017.
Among 12 to 15 year olds, 3% were current smokers; the smoking rate for both males was 3%, and for females was 2%.
Among 16 to 17 year olds, 8% were current smokers; the smoking rate for both males and females was 8%.
