How to support a young person who smokes or vapes

Caring for children or teenagers who are affected by nicotine addiction can be a challenge. But there is information and help available.

It’s best to talk about smoking and vaping early. You can help prepare them for a situation in which they may be offered a nicotine product.

How can you know if your child is addicted to vaping? It can help to learn about what vapes look like and how the aerosol smells. Signs of vaping may include the fruity smells of vapes. They may get anxious in a situation where they cannot use nicotine for a while.

Talking to your child about their addiction can be tricky.

A good way to start the talk is by asking curious questions, such as: “What do you know about vaping?”. Try to keep the conversation positive and listen without judgement. You can let them know how to reach out for help from Quitline, a doctor or pharmacist. A psychologist can also help young people who want to quit.
